The Psychology Behind Colour

The Psychology Behind Colour

The Psychology Behind Colour

It is interesting to think that even as children we are drawn to color, children often proudly declare and attach to a “favorite color” and it appears in their clothing, bedding, toys, knapsacks, and even toothbrushes.

As adults, many of us don’t pay attention to color as much as we used to. However, color can be associated with certain feelings and emotions.

Even when we are not consciously focusing on color, advertisers, brands, and companies are. They do use it to create trust, reach more customers, create cravings, and to sell products.

“Colour psychology is the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior. Colour influences perceptions that are not obvious, such as the taste of food. Colors can also enhance the effectiveness of placebos.”

In a study titled “Impact of color on marketing,” researchers found that up to 90% of snap judgments made about products can be based on color alone, depending on the product.

In another curious study titled “A rose by any other name…,”  when subjects were asked to evaluate products with different color names, such as makeup, fancy names were preferred far more often.

For example, “mocha” was found to be significantly more likable than “brown,” despite the fact that the subjects were shown the same color. Further research found the same effect applied to a huge variety of products. Elaborately branded paint colors were rated “as more pleasing to the eye” than their simply named counterparts by consumers.

It has also been shown that more unusual and unique color names are preferable for everything from jelly beans to sweatshirts. For instance, crayon colors with names such as “razzmatazz” were more likely to be chosen than names such as “lemon yellow.”

Dr. Max Lûscher from Switzerland studied color psychology during the early 1900s. He devoted his life to the study of how color affects behavior and was hired by some of the world’s largest companies as a consultant.

Dr.Lûscher believed that sensory perception of color is objective and universally shared by all. Lüscher believed that because the color selections are guided unconsciously, they reveal the person as they are, not as they perceive themselves or would like to be perceived.

“Color preferences are subjective, and that this distinction allows subjective states to be objectively measured by using test colors”.

He created a simple test based upon fundamentals in color psychology. With years of research by color psychologists, the characteristics of certain colors have been identified to cause an emotional response in people. This was done by studying the response from hundreds of thousands of test subjects around the world to isolate how certain colors make us feel. By doing the reverse, using the colors people prefer to determine how people feel, we can get some interesting indicators about a person’s current emotional state.

Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” ~Wassily Kandinsky

The Man Who Soars With The Birds

The Man Who Soars With The Birds

Flying Machine Lets You Soar With Birds

Imagine soaring alongside migrating geese high in the sky in an ultralight plane or even a hot air balloon! Introducing former meteorologist, Christian Moullec who turned his dream guiding vulnerable birds on safe migration routes into reality!

“Today, weather permitting, he soars with birds on an almost daily basis,” National Geographic.

He credits Bill Lishman, who was the first person to conduct an aircraft-led migration of birds using an ultralight as his inspiration.

Moullec has been doing the same ever since he learned that lesser white-fronted geese were struggling with their migration from Germany to Sweden. In 1995, he took to the skies to help them

“In 1995 I wanted to reintroduce lesser white-fronted geese into the wild in Lapland,

Moullec tells National Geographic. And so he began raising orphaned ones and adapted a two-seater ultralight aircraft to guide them on safe migration.

He believes the use of chemicals in agriculture is the cause of the disappearing migratory birds in Europe and is using his photography to raise awareness.

Along with being a guardian angel to many of these migrating birds, Moullec also offers tourist ride-along to support his efforts and document his work as an aid to conservation.

“The most beautiful thing is to fly in the heavens with the angels that are the birds.

The Six Hidden Giants Of Holland

The Six Hidden Giants Of Holland

The Six Hidden Giants Of Holland

The massive whimsical “Six Forgotten Giants” forests are right out of a magical legend!

Envisioned and created by imaginative Danish artist Thomas Dambo the sculptures are hidden in western Copenhagen‘s forest. His dream was to create an open-air treasure hunt.

“As humans, we often have a way of choosing the beaten path and the main road. So when the municipalities of west Copenhagen contacted me about a project it seemed natural to make something which could get people out and explore the beautiful nature in the hidden outskirts, which you usually wouldn’t see.”

Using recycled scrap wood, the incredible sculptures were built with the help of locals. They were then intentionally hidden in six of West Copenhagen’s municipalities. Thomas wanted to entice folks of all ages to explore new places they’ve to find the wooden giants.

Words Of Wisdom – Beatrix Potter

Words Of Wisdom – Beatrix Potter

Words Of Wisdom – Beatrix Potter

Born Helen Potter on July 28th, 1866 this famous children’s author is better known by her middle name, Beatrix. The wonderful writer who brought the world the adventures of Peter Rabbit.

Growing up in a privileged household, Beatrix lived a solitary childhood and would instead spend her time with her myriad pets wandering the grounds of her holiday homes in the Lake District and in Scotland learning about and developing a love for the local flora and fauna there.

Opportunities for further education were very limited for women of the period, Beatrix was very fond of spending time in nature. Her study of fungi and her stunning watercolor depictions would lead her to become very well respected in the field of mycology.

She tasted success as an illustrator, selling some of her work to be used for greeting cards.

One of her most famous works, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, started out as a story she wrote for the children of a former governess in a letter.

Encouraged by the children to continue the tale in her letters, potter later transformed this letter into a book, which she published privately in 1902, with Frederick Warne & Co, The publishing company was run by three brothers. One of those brothers was Norman Warne, whom she quickly fell in love with and became engaged too.

Her upper-class parents objected to their love but love prevailed until sadly, only weeks after proposing to Beatrix, he passed away died suddenly and unexpectedly of leukemia.

A devastated Beatrix poured her love of wildlife into practice after receiving a legacy from an aunt, which along with the proceeds of her books, allowed her to purchase a farm in order to preserve the landscape.

Upon her death, at the age of 77 all this land was bequeathed to The National Trust and now goes to make up a large part of The Lake District National Park.

With over 30 books to her name, Beatrix has become a timeless part of many people’s childhoods and her stories continue to sell well, being made into films, ballets, animations, and songs.

His work includes many of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death.

Geisel adopted the name “Dr. Seuss” as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College and as a graduate student at the University of Oxford. He left Oxford in 1927 to begin his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and various other publications.

He published his first children’s book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937. The book was reportedly rejected by nearly 30 publishers but after his chance meeting with a friend who was an editor at Vanguard Press, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street was finally released to rave reviews and pathing his path as a timeless children’s author.

He also worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns, most notably for FLIT and Standard Oil. During World War II, he took a brief hiatus from children’s literature to illustrate political for the New York newspaper PM. from 1941-1943, Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, worked as the chief editorial cartoonist for the New York magazine PM, creating over 400 editorial cartoons.

As well worked in the animation and film department of the United States Army where he wrote, produced or animated many productions – both live-action and animated – including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

After the war, Geisel returned to writing children’s books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), If I Ran the Circus (1956), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). He published over 60 books during his career, which have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, four feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series.

Geisel won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for Horton Hatches the Egg and again in 1961 for And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. According to various reports, by the early 21st century more than 600 million copies of Dr. Seuss books had been sold worldwide. Geisel’s birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association.
