Ellen DeGeneres often simply known as “Ellen” is a compassionate comedian turned actress, then daytime talk show host that has made millions laugh over her successful career, due in part to her big break on the legendary Johnny Carson Show. Beyond comedy and her personal life, Ellen is also respected for her caring nature and the promotion of issues and people who might otherwise be forgotten.

Before she found her calling in comedy, Ellen worked a variety of odd jobs including clerical work for a law firm, working retail, waiting tables, house painting, bartending, and shucking oysters. She even sold Hoover vacuum cleaners door-to-door, a job she joked about with Willie Nelson — also a former door-to-door vacuum salesman — on her show.

She got her start in comedy at Clyde’s Comedy Club. At the time, it was the only comedy club in New Orleans and she graduated from comic to emcee. This led to more shows throughout the South and soon the country.

Ellen toured the states, honing her comedic timing and craft. In 1982, she was selected by Showtime as “America’s Funniest Person.” This led to a series of cable and late-night television appearances, including a shot on “The Tonight Show” in 1986. Ellen was the first female comedian to be invited over and receive the honor.

She transitioned from comedian to sitcom star with the success of “Ellen.” The quirky show, based on her stand-up comedy. Her show continues to bring smiles to all ages in its 13th season and has received numerous awards, including multiple Emmy’s for “Outstanding Talk Show.”

On top of being a comedian, television host, actress, writer, producer, and LGBT activist, DeGeneres launched the eleveneleven record label designed to promote talented musical acts that may otherwise be overlooked by larger labels. She also started her own production company, A Very Good Production and launched the brand, ED Ellen DeGeneres, She has won 30 Emmys, 20 People’s Choice Awards (more than any other person, and numerous other awards for her work and charitable efforts.
