Gary Sinise Sends Families To Disney World

Gary Sinise Sends Families To Disney World

Gary Sinise Sends Families To Disney World

The Gary Sinise Foundation is a non-profit that sends families to Disney World! The foundation focuses on veterans, first responders, and their families, has helped send almost 2,000 people from Gold Star families to Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida.

This is all under the umbrella of the Snowball Express, which is a holiday season program that aims to help families of fallen service members.

The Snowball Express

According to an Instagram post, the foundation is tracking 1,722 participants this year, including hundreds of kids from over 650 families.

Snowball Express started in 2006 and aims to create a five-day experience for the families that is fun, inspiring, and therapeutic. In 2017, Snowball Express became an official Gary Sinise Foundation program.

The program may be young, but through the tireless work of its supporters and members, it has quickly made an impact on participants.

tweet from Fallen Patriots, a non-profit that focuses on helping Gold Star family members get to college, said that participant Dale Mundell now wants to fly for American Air. Which is the airline sponsoring the event, in order to help other family members take part in such events in the future.

A National Event

Airports got in on the festivities as well. The Killeen Airport, a familiar location for any service members who have activated or deployed through Fort Hood, Texas, welcomed Snowball Express participants and a man in a Santa costume met with the families.

In Nashville, other travellers stopped what they were doing and held a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. U.S. troops in the terminal stood at attention and saluted as the song was performed, and you can see bystanders drying their eyes in a Facebook video of the event.

Meanwhile, airport employees seem amped about the Snowball Express as well. The National Air Traffic Controllers Association sent tote bags to participants to help them get all their goods from location to location, and the controllers themselves posted photos on social media celebrating as flights took off from airfields under their control.

Welcome To Disney World

And around the Disney parks, other park goers and local residents have chimed in on social media as they ran into the crowds of Gold Star family members and were affected by the experience.

For some, it was simply a great experience to see all the happy families, but for others, it was also a somber reminder that service members and first responders are still in harm’s way every day.

After all, some participants are as young as 2 or 3 years old, as Snowball Express participant Ramonda Anderson pointed out in a tweet.

If you’re interested in supporting the Gary Sinise Foundation, which also builds adaptive homes for disabled veterans, hosts free theater nights for veterans, and helps pay for training and equipment for first responders, they are always accepting donations on their website and are part of the Combined Federal Campaign. Use CFC number 27963.

Teddy Bear Hockey Toss Hits All-Time Record

Teddy Bear Hockey Toss Hits All-Time Record

Teddy Bear Hockey Toss Hits All-Time Record

The heartwarming Hershey Bears 2018 Teddy Bear Toss has broken a new record with nearly 35,000 stuffed animals thrown onto the ice on Sunday at the Giant Centre in Pennsylvania.

The Teddy Bear Toss takes place every year across minor professional and junior hockey arenas, as fans are invited to bring stuffed toys to the game and hurl them over the boards when the home team scores its first goal.

Those teddy bears and other assorted stuffed animals are then donated to children in need, in time for the holidays. The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual tradition where hockey fans throw stuffed animals onto the ice after the first goal to donate to charity.

PHOTO CREDIT: JUST SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO CREDIT: JUST SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

The concept originated with the Kamloops Blazers in 1993. The tradition spread quickly through the  Canadian Hockey League, and around the world; excluding the National Hockey League, which discourages anything thrown on the ice

The night also produced tens of thousands of dollars in monetary donations. Pennsylvania charity CommunityAid had pledged to donate 50 cents per stuffed animal thrown (up to $15,000) and an anonymous season ticket holder pledged $1 per stuffed animal.

You can see a video of the record breaking moment below.

Comic Feature – Mark Parisi

Comic Feature – Mark Parisi

Comic Feature – Mark Parisi

Off The Mark is a comic panel created by Mark Parisi which began in 1987 and now appears in 100 newspapers. It also appears on greeting cards, in magazines, on T-shirts and more. Off The Mark is distributed daily by Andrews McMeel Universal.

Parisi began drawing when he was very young, and frequently copied comic strips out of newspapers. Parisi said that after reading Charles Schulz’ comic strip Peanuts, he “immediately wanted to draw it.”

After many odd jobs and a graphic design degree from Salem State College, Mark felt he had two marketable skills: cartooning and grocery bagging. He decided to choose cartooning, even though it didn’t pay as well. With influences ranging from Charles Schulz, MAD Magazine and, more obviously, Gary Larson, he started self-syndicating his off the mark comic panel in 1987.

The humour of this comic panel focuses on off-beat, slice-of-life situations. Andrews McMeel Universal describes it as: “A world of scheming pets, evil computers, and talking plants that puts an ironic, absurd or just plain silly spin on everyday life.”

Off The Mark was named “Best Newspaper Panel” by the National Cartoonists Society in 2008, and again in 2011. It was also nominated in 2004, 2006, 2013, and 2016. Off The Mark greeting cards were named “Best Greeting Cards” by the National Cartoonists Society in 2013. Mark is still drawing hilarious comics as well as put out a book series for kids called Marty Pants. SOURCE WIKIPEDIA, OFF THE MARK,

Comic Feature – Berkeley Breathed (OPUS)

Comic Feature – Berkeley Breathed (OPUS)

Comic Feature – Berkeley Breathed ( Opus )

Guy Berkeley “Berke” Breathed is an American cartoonist, children’s book creator, director and screenwriter, best known for comic strips Bloom County, Outland, and Opus. Bloom County earned Breathed the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987. He is only one of two cartoonists to have one a Pulitzer Prize for Bloom County, which dealt with socio-political issues as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters and humorous analogies.

Breathed was first published when he was hired part-time by the Austin American-Statesman to draw editorial cartoons for the newspaper. This job was short-lived; he was dismissed shortly after one of his cartoons caused outrage. His first regularly published strip, Academia Waltz, appeared in the Daily Texan in 1978. The strip attracted notice from the editors of the Washington Post who recruited him to do a nationally syndicated strip.

On December 8, 1980, Bloom County made its debut and featured some of the characters from Academia Waltz, including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paraplegic Vietnam war veteran Cutter John. Bloom County earned Berkeley the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. The strip eventually appeared in over 1,200 newspapers around the world until he retired the daily strip in 1989, stating, “A good comic strip is no more eternal than a ripe melon. The ugly truth is that in most cases, comics age less gracefully than their creators”.

He replaced this strip with the surreal Sunday-only cartoon, Outland in 1989, which featured some of the Bloom County characters, including Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat. He ended Outland in 1995. Eight years later, Berkeley began producing the comic strip, Opus, a Sunday-only strip featuring Opus the Penguin, who was one of the iconic characters from Bloom County. He colors the cartoon himself with Adobe Photoshop.

In addition to his syndicated cartoon work, which has produced eleven best-selling cartoon collections, he has also produced seven children’s books, two of which, , were made into animated films. Berkeley’s writing has also been featured in numerous publications. In 2015 he began posting starting a cartoon entitled “Bloom County 2015” and he now posts a new comic almost daily. Meet The Voice of Winnie The Pooh

Meet The Voice of Winnie The Pooh

Meet The Voice of Winnie The Pooh (And Tigger Too)

This is a fantastic behind the scenes look at a childhood classic, besides it is not everyday you get a chance to meet the voice of Winnie the Pooh!

What do the lovable Winnie the Pooh, Sonic the Hedgehog, the Tasmanian Devil and Darkwing Duck have in common? Voice actor Jim Cummings!

“He’s brought the honey-obsessed bear (and sidekick Tigger) to life for the last 30 years. And that’s not to mention some 400 other credits, including the singing voice of Scar in “The Lion King,” and the slithering Kaa in “The Jungle Book 2.”

Great Big Story sat down with Jim to uncover the man behind the voice, and to learn which of his iconic characters he identifies with most closely (hint: it’s someone who wears a cape).”

“This story is a part of our Human Condition series. Let us connect you to some of the most peculiar, stirring, extraordinary, and distinctive people in the world.” Great Big Story
