Charlie Chaplin remains one of the world’s most influential stars, a self-professed “clown”.

Best known for his comedy which was so passionate and potent.

Charlie Chaplin had a gift he nurtured that allowed him to bring smiles and laughter during the Depression.

What he is less known for is his compassion. Charlie was born into poverty and adversity which he used as fuel to make people smile.

Below is his brief biography on how he came to be the world’s first famous clown and quotes highlighting his timeless wisdom. His inspiring nature led him seemed to focus on happiness and kindness.

Charlie was born Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE on April 16th, 1889 in London.

Sadly he was born into poverty and hardship.

He was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine. His mother struggled financially when his father was absent.
When he was just 14, sadly his mother was committed to a mental asylum.

He began performing at an early age, touring music halls and later on working as a stage actor and comedian.

At 19, he was signed to the prestigious Fred Karno company, which took him to America where began appearing in 1914 for Keystone Studios.

It was there he created his iconic “The Tramp” persona which led him to soar in popularity.

By 1918, he was one of the best-known figures in the film industry and became a worldwide icon.

From an early stage, Chaplin began to direct his own films from an early stage and continued to hone his craft throughout his life.

His remarkable career would span more than 75 years until a year before his death in 1977.
