Guy Berkeley “Berke” Breathed is an American cartoonist, children’s book creator, director and screenwriter, best known for comic strips Bloom County, Outland, and Opus. Bloom County earned Breathed the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987. He is only one of two cartoonists to have one a Pulitzer Prize for Bloom County, which dealt with socio-political issues as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters and humorous analogies.
Breathed was first published when he was hired part-time by the Austin American-Statesman to draw editorial cartoons for the newspaper. This job was short-lived; he was dismissed shortly after one of his cartoons caused outrage. His first regularly published strip, Academia Waltz, appeared in the Daily Texan in 1978. The strip attracted notice from the editors of the Washington Post who recruited him to do a nationally syndicated strip.
On December 8, 1980, Bloom County made its debut and featured some of the characters from Academia Waltz, including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paraplegic Vietnam war veteran Cutter John. Bloom County earned Berkeley the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. The strip eventually appeared in over 1,200 newspapers around the world until he retired the daily strip in 1989, stating, “A good comic strip is no more eternal than a ripe melon. The ugly truth is that in most cases, comics age less gracefully than their creators”.
He replaced this strip with the surreal Sunday-only cartoon, Outland in 1989, which featured some of the Bloom County characters, including Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat. He ended Outland in 1995. Eight years later, Berkeley began producing the comic strip, Opus, a Sunday-only strip featuring Opus the Penguin, who was one of the iconic characters from Bloom County. He colors the cartoon himself with Adobe Photoshop.
In addition to his syndicated cartoon work, which has produced eleven best-selling cartoon collections, he has also produced seven children’s books, two of which, , were made into animated films. Berkeley’s writing has also been featured in numerous publications. In 2015 he began posting starting a cartoon entitled “Bloom County 2015” and he now posts a new comic almost daily. The physics behind gravity largely determines the make-up of Earth, with tides, weather formations, transport and beyond all determined by our attraction to Earth’s surface.
But, when gravity leaves us, why do we float?. What would life be without gravity?
When asked about what it feels like to walk on the moon at one-sixth of Earth’s gravity, Buzz Aldrin once described the atmosphere as being filled with “magnificent desolation”.
He explained what it felt like to take each step, saying it’s “perhaps not too far from a trampoline, but without the springiness and instability”.
When NASA’s Scott Kelly returned from almost a full year in space seemingly grew two inches while he was up there for a still unexplainable reason.
As fun as experiencing no gravity sounds and looks, there can be some unwanted side effects resulting from it. Lean about “The Science of Weightlessness” in this interesting infographic created by Security Scale Service.

On the ramps of Woodward West in Tehachapi, California (US), Aaron, a professional wheelchair motocross (WCMX) athlete soared into history by setting three titles in celebration of Guinness World Records Day
PHOTO CREDIT: GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
At the age of eight, Aaron, who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada, began using a wheelchair for mobility. His condition, spina bifida, caused him to lose the ability to utilize his legs. But relying on a wheelchair didn’t deter him from reaching his goal to become a professional athlete.
“When I was a kid I dreamed about being a pro-skater or a pro-BMX rider, I just loved watching X Games,” he said. “I was born with spinal bifida and it gave me a different set of wheels to try and make it happen.”
“First time I ever dropped into a skate park, I was 8 years old. From that point, I was completely hooked on it and kept chasing it.”
Through his successful attempts and passion for WCMX, Aaron now adds new titles to his impressive roster. He currently holds the the First landed wheelchair backflip (in 2008), and Highest ramp jump by wheelchair (60 cm in 2010), and the Longest duration balancing a side wheelie(manual wheelchair) (18.22 seconds in 2012) titles.

Beloved comic book icon Stan Lee recently passed away leaving us with a legacy of timeless superheroes including Spiderman and the Fantastic Four, adored by generations of fans. In honor of this humble and creative human we dedicate this Words of Wisdom to him.
Stanley Martin Lieber was born on December 28, 1922, in New York City to Romanian immigrants Celia and Jack Lieber. With part of his childhood spent during the Great Depression, Lieber and his younger brother, Larry, watched his parents struggle to make ends meet for the family.
He fell in love with the art of writing young and in his youth he worked such part-time jobs as writing obituaries for a news services and press releases for the National Tuberculosis Centre. At fifteen, Lee entered a high school essay competition sponsored by the New York Herald Tribune. Lee claims to have won the prize for three straight weeks, goading the newspaper to write him and ask him to let someone else win. The paper suggested he look into writing professionally, which Lee claims “probably changed my life.”
In 1930 after graduating from high school at age 16, Lieber was hired as an editorial assistant for Timely Comics, and in 1942 he was promoted to editor. Lieber, who later shortened his name to “Lee” as a writer. Lee entered the United States Army in early 1942 and served within the US as a member of the Signal Corps, repairing telegraph poles and other communications equipment. He was later transferred to the Training Film Division, where he worked writing manuals, training films, slogans, and occasionally cartooning. His military classification, he says, was “playwright”; he adds that only nine men in the U.S. Army were given that title
In the early ’60s, Lee was called upon by his boss to create a series for Marvel Comics(Timely’s new name) that could compete with rival DC Comics’ hit title Justice League of America. following the encouragement of his wife, Joan, Lee did away with some of the usual superhero conventions. Ge pioneered a more naturalistic approach to writing superhero comics.
With artist and co-creator Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four was born in 1961. After a massive success, a slew of new characters soon sprung from Lee and fellow Marvel cohorts Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, including superheroes, including the Hulk, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Daredevil and the X-Men. Lee later worked in a number of comic-related business and multimedia ventures.
Lee was particularly known for his dynamism with copy and for imbuing his characters with a sense of humanity, tackling real-world issues like bigotry and drug use, which would influence comics for decades. An outgoing, humorous showman, he also developed a number of slogans as part of his shtick, including a Latin-derived call to rise, “Excelsior!”
Marvel comics became a highly popular franchise, and Stan Lee was promoted to editorial director and publisher in 1972. He later moved to the West Coast to be involved in Marvel’s film ventures and eventually became chairman emeritus.
Lee was involved in a variety of multimedia projects while also serving as an ambassador for Marvel, even though he has filed lawsuits against the company and been the subject of debate over appropriate compensation for comic creators. The writer has seen Marvel develop into an entity that has inspired blockbuster film entertainment like the Iron Man,X-Men, Thor and The Avengers franchises.
In 2001 received a Medal of Arts honour from President George W. Bush and launched the History Channel show Stan Lee’s Superhumans, a series that looked at people with remarkable skills and abilities. In 2008 he was awarded a National Medal of Arts.
2012 saw more new ventures. Lee co-wrote a graphic novel, Romeo and Juliet: The War, which landed on The New York Times‘ best-seller list and launched a YouTube channel, Stan Lee’s World of Heroes, which features comic, comedy and sci-fi content. The world said goodbye to superhero Stan Lee this year, a human who inspired generations of young and old changed the comic world. SOURCE BIOGRAPHY, WIKIPEDIA, BRITTANICA
